If you have a vehicle that is more than 25 years old, you may request an antique license plate. To begin the process, you will need to visit a local tax county collector’s office with the proper paperwork in hand, including a filled out Application for Antique License Plates. The antique license plates application, issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, must be filled out in its entirety by the applicant.
Filling out the Application You will need to enter information about your residential address, your daytime phone number, your email address, your current Texas plate number, your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and more. In order to process your request, you must also pay a set fee in the amount of $50 if your vehicle was manufactured after 1920, or $40 if your vehicle was manufactured before 1921. The antique license plate will be valid for a period of five years. When handing in your license plates application, it is important that you identify the type of vehicle you are requesting a plate for: an antique truck, an antique motorcycle or an antique automobile.
Other Documents to Present If this is your first time obtaining registration for your vehicle, additional documents will need to be turned in at your local tax county collector’s office. These items include proof of ownership (such as your car title), proof of car insurance and your valid Texas drivers license. Make sure to sign the Application for Antique License Plates prior to submitting this official documentation.
