Texas ID Card

If you do not intend to drive on the streets of Texas, then you should seek an alternate form of identification to have on your person. By applying for a TX ID card, you will be able to visit government facilities and use it for traveling purposes as a primary form of identification. To apply for your first Texas ID card, you must gather documents that verify your Social Security Number, your Texas residency and your identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status. How to Apply for an ID Card

The state of Texas makes it very simple for residents to apply for ID cards. All you have to do is visit your nearest DPS office with the proper documentation in hand and payment for any necessary fees. You will be required to present the following items:

The fee to obtain a standard ID card is $16 if you are under the age of 60. Individuals who are 60 years of age or older will be required to pay a low fee of $6.

How to Renew Your ID Card

There are numerous ways in which you can renew ID cards with the Texas Department of Public Safety. See your options below, and select the one that is most convenient for you.

  • By Phone – Call the TX DPS at 1-866-357-3639.
  • In Person – Visit your local DPS office with the proper documentation and payment for fees.
  • Online – Visit the Texas DPS Driver License Renewal page.
  • By Mail – The Texas Department of Public Safety mails out a renewal notice a few months before your ID card expires. Make sure to follow the instructions on the form you receive to request your new identification by mail.

In Texas, you have the option to renew your ID card up to a year before it expires, or up to two years after its expiration date. If you complete the renewal process during this time period, you will not face any penalties.

Bear in mind that in order to complete an ID card renewal online or by phone, you must meet a set of eligibility requirements that include the following:

  • You are an adult who is 18 years or age or older.
  • You are a United States citizen.
  • You already have your Social Security Number in the DPS system.
  • Your last ID renewal was conducted in person.
  • Your ID card expires in less than 12 months.

When renewing your identification card online, make sure to have a valid credit card on hand. Acceptable credit cards include MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover.

How to Replace Your ID Card

The only method to replace ID cards in Texas is in person at your nearest DPS office. It is important to have a copy of a police report with you if your identification card was stolen. During your visit, you will be asked to fill out an Application for Renewal/Replacement/Change of a Texas Driver License or Identification Card to complete the process.
