Change Texas Drivers License Address

When moving to a new residence in Texas, you must inform the Department of Public Safety (DPS) of your new address and update your drivers license. With an address change, you must submit the new information to the DPS no more than 30 days after a move. Without a drivers license address update, you may not receive important DPS correspondence about license renewal. When you need to submit a drivers license change of address you may submit the update online, by mail or in person. When you need to submit an address change, you must make sure to include an accepted form of payment.

Note:  It is advisable that you change your address when you renew your Texas driver’s license and ID card. That way, you will avoid paying additional fees to change your address on top of the renewal fee.

Address Change in Person

If you decide to commence the address changing process in person, you will have to make the trip to your nearby driver license office and fill out an Application for Change of Address (Form DL-43).

Additionally, you will be required to:

  • Bring your current driver’s license and proper ID documentation to prove your citizenship or legal presence in the country.
  • Pay a $10 fee in cash or check made payable to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Be advised that the process typically takes roughly 15 to 20 days to complete.

Address Change by Mail

If you decide to go with this option, you will have to complete an Application for Change of Address on Valid Texas Driver License & Identification Card (form DF-64) and mail it to the following address:

Texas Department of Public Safety,

  1. O. Box 15999,

Austin, TX, 78761-5999.

Don’t forget to sign the application before mailing it together with a $10 fee through a check or money order made payable to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Note: You must change the address on your drivers license in person if you are 18 years of age or younger. Also, keep in mind that this service is not available for changing address on CDL licenses.

Online Address Change

The online address changing procedure is the most convenient option and the preferred choice of most Texans who are qualified to take advantage of it.

This type of address change requires compliance with a strict set of conditions, which state that the applicant must:

  • Hold a Class C or CM driver license
  • Be at least 18 years of age

Once you’ve made sure you are eligible to use the online service, make sure you have all of the following items:

  • Your current driver license.
  • A printer to print your temporary driver license and payment receipt (it will not be emailed to you).
  • A valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express Only) to pay the $10 fee, plus an additional $1 service charge.

Note: This type of address change also takes about 15 to 20 days.
